Relax Through Your Appointment With IV Sedation Dentistry

For some however, just the thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair is enough to make their entire bodies tense up with fear. Patients who experience elevated levels of anxiety or who suffer from dental phobias will avoid going to the dentist at all costs, often at the expense of their oral health. For these patients, Dr. Mario Cabianca offers sedation dentistry at his Trail office to provide a relaxed, comfortable option for traditional dental procedures. If you have dental phobia or anxiety issues and would like to find out if our deep relaxation techniques may be right for you, contact our office to schedule a consultation.

IV Sedation

Throughout his career, Dr. Cabianca has found intravenous (IV) sedation to be the most effective method for ensuring patient comfort and managing anxiety during dental procedures. In IV sedation, the medication is delivered instantly into a vein in the hand or arm enabling the patient to gently enter a state of deep relaxation quickly. The medication that we use allows for our dentist to precisely control the sedative effects and to continually adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure. While under conscious sedation, patients can typically respond to questions and are able to convey to Dr. Cabianca if they are experiencing any discomfort.

Before your procedure, Dr. Cabianca will give you specific instructions for pre- and post-operative care so that there will not be any confusion surrounding your treatment. Patients typically do not remember going through the procedure and often think that they were asleep throughout treatment. The after effects of the medication will make you feel groggy and unsteady, and therefore you must have an adult (at least 18 years of age) to drive you home. Patients should not drive a vehicle or operate dangerous machinery for at least 24 hours following IV sedation. Dr. Cabianca will call you the evening of your procedure or the morning after to check on your recovery and ensure that there are no complications.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

IV sedation is often used in the case of wisdom tooth extractions. The third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, typically surface (erupt) from beneath the gums between the ages of 15 and 25. Due to lack of space in the jaws, however, these new teeth often become impacted, meaning that they do not grow in properly. In addition to causing pain and swelling, an impacted tooth can harm the surrounding tissue, teeth, and bone. Having your wisdom teeth removed when it is deemed necessary can eliminate these problems and prevent the development of other complications.

Patient Safety

IV sedation is an extremely safe option when administered by a trained and qualified provider. Dr. Cabianca has undergone special training to perform these advanced sedation techniques and has extensive clinical experience. Additionally, Dr. Cabianca is also trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association. In order to obtain approval to perform IV sedation, offices must be equipped with certain medications and emergency equipment. Our office has much more than the basic requirements and our staff is continually taking part in training programs to ensure that our patients are receiving the highest level of care. We have a registered nurse on staff to assist the doctor, and are one of the only practices in the area qualified to administer multiple drug IV sedation procedures.
