Sedation Dentistry
Have you avoided going to the dentist because of fear or apprehension about the dental experience? Has it been several years or more since you last received any kind of dental care? Do you wish you could be entirely relaxed while at the dentist and even have all of your treatment performed in a single visit? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry. Dr. Cabianca offers two types of conscious sedation through two proven methods:
Oral Medication taken about an hour before your appointment will help to eliminate mild anxiety and allow you to relax throughout your treatment. This option is not as effective as intravenous sedation; oral sedation is more suitable for short appointments in older patients (more than 40 years old).
Intravenous Sedation involves the administration of a sedative through an intravenous catheter. This form of sedation is designed for individuals with more severe dental anxiety. With IV sedation, the level of sedation can be carefully controlled throughout the treatment, ensuring that the patient never experiences too little or too much. IV Sedation Brochure
WHEN is Intravenous Sedation administered?
Conscious sedation is administered in Dr. Cabianca’s office to facilitate the following procedures and circumstances:
WHO CAN ADMINISTER Intravenous Sedation?
Intravenous sedation is extremely safe when administered by qualified providers. The use of IV Sedation in dentistry is carefully regulated by the British Columbia College of Dental Surgeons. To perform these advanced sedative techniques, special training and clinical experience is required. In addition to training in sedation techniques, Dr. Cabianca is also trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association. Approval to perform IV Sedation requires the office to be specially equipped with emergency equipment and medications. This includes an ECG monitor to observe your heart rate, rhythm, and breathing. The office contains more emergency equipment and drugs than required by law and the staff constantly trains to provide the highest level of sedation care.
HOW will I FEEL?
You will feel comfortable at all times. You will be in a deep and relaxed state but will be responsive to verbal commands. Patients often comment that they were asleep throughout the procedure. You will be given a local anesthetic for the work in your mouth after the sedative is administered.
Following your treatment, it is unlikely you will remember the actual dental procedures. You will be groggy and unsteady and therefore MUST have a responsible ADULT (18 years of age or older) escort you home. Patients should not drive a vehicle, operate dangerous equipment, or make any important decisions for at least 24 hours after receiving intravenous sedation. A follow-up phone call is usually made to check on the patient’s condition and answer any questions.

Crowns
Also known as “caps,” dental crowns are custom-made tooth replicas that fit over damaged teeth to restore their strength and beauty. Crowns are excellent solutions for teeth that have become severely damaged by decay or trauma or suffer from cosmetic imperfections such as discolouration or misshapenness.
At our office, we use all-porcelain crowns to restore the health and appearance of our patients’ smiles. These restorations have no metal bases that can produce a gray hue around your gum line over time. The high quality porcelain also results in a tooth that looks and feels just like your natural teeth. Dr. Cabianca can even replace any metal-based crowns you have with these more aesthetically pleasing restorations.
If you would like to learn more about how a crown can provide you with a healthy new smile, please contact Dr. Cabianca today.
Bridges
A bridge is a dental restoration that is designed to create a full smile by filling in the space left by a missing tooth. A bridge consists of an artificial tooth surrounded on either side by a crown. These crowns are placed over the teeth surrounding a gap so that the artificial tooth fills the empty space. Bridges are custom made to complement the features of surrounding teeth, and so create extremely natural looking smiles. In addition, bridges add strength to the treated area and improve chewing and speaking ability. At our office we provide patients with all-ceramic bridges. These restorations are free of any metal bases that could potentially discolour your smile.
Please contact us today if you think you may be a candidate for a bridge and would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Cabianca.
Porcelain Veneers
One of the most popular and effective ways to eliminate gaps, chips, or discolouration in your smile is with porcelain veneers. Veneers are ultra-thin laminates that are adhered to the front surfaces of teeth to mask these and other imperfections such as misalignment and disproportionate teeth. Dr. Cabinaca provides patients with custom made veneers that complement the size, shape, and texture of the surrounding teeth to produce beautiful, natural looking results. The quality porcelain from which veneers are crafted is highly resistant to staining, ensuring that your new smile will provide you with years of increased confidence and enjoyment. If you would like to learn more about how veneers could enhance your smile, please contact us today.
Cosmetic Bonding/Tooth-Coloured Fillings
Cosmetic bonding is a procedure that is designed to restore the appearance of chipped, fractured, or stained teeth as well as close spaces in between teeth. Bonding can also be used as an alternative to the placement of unsightly metal fillings. The procedure is relatively simple and begins with the application of a tooth-coloured resin to the damaged tooth. The resin is then hardened using an ultraviolet light after which the tooth is shaped and polished to give it the look and feel of a natural tooth.
For many people, bonding is an ideal cosmetic dentistry option because it produces results in a single appointment and is less expensive than other procedures. To learn more about this or any of our other procedures, please contact Dr. Cabianca today.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
The third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, typically surface (erupt) from beneath the gums between the ages of 15 and 25. Due to lack of space in the jaws, however, these new teeth often become impacted, meaning that they do not grow in properly. In addition to causing pain and swelling, an impacted tooth can harm the surrounding tissue, teeth, and bone.
Having your wisdom teeth removed when it is deemed necessary can eliminate these problems and prevent the development of other complications such as cysts, tumors, and disease. Using antibiotics to treat an impacted tooth can help temporarily reduce the associated symptoms; however, removing wisdom teeth is the only way to permanently eliminate these problems.
Dr. Cabianca has extensive experience in oral surgery and offers several sedation options to eliminate the discomfort and anxiety of the extraction procedure. Contact our office today to schedule a consultation and learn how Dr. Cabianca can help you comfortably and conveniently receive the care you need.
If you are missing teeth, dental implants can restore your smile.
